Community Building Sessions™

A group of children sit in a circle with their teacher

Community Building Sessions™ are short, purposeful activities that help children feel calm, connected, and ready to learn by developing emotional intelligence skills.

With students sitting or standing in a circle, each session follows a simple structure:

  • Breathing to practice mindfulness, allowing students to become present, calm, and ready to learn
  • Greeting to build and practice social skills while providing a sense of belonging and connection
  • Compliments & Appreciations to practice kindness and build empathy
  • Group Activity to build relationships and community
  • News to provide announcements/reminders and give students an opportunity to share information
  • Transition Breathing to provide a smooth transition into the next part of the day

While each component of Community Building Sessions™ varies from session to session (for example, teachers select a different greeting activity), the order of components remains the same. Community Building Sessions™ provide students with a safe, reliable structure to count on, making it an ideal program for student-led leadership.
